Bullying and Harassment
Students are expected demonstrate respect for each other as well as staff and to be aware of their own responsibilities as a student and a member of the College community. The atmosphere at the College is quiet, relaxed and friendly. The College believes that all members of its community should feel safe and be able to make the most of the opportunities afforded to them while on site.
Any form of bullying or harassment will not be tolerated at Thebarton Senior College and we have formal processes for reporting and following up any incidences. These procedures are explained during orientation, are printed in the student diary and can be viewed here.
Students, parents or caregivers may also contact the Parent Complaints Unit at any stage of the process on 1800 677 435 or via emailing DECD.ParentComplaint@sa.gov.au.
Attendance
The most successful students are those who are able to attend regularly. We therefore encourage you to attend all lessons and participate in class as much as possible and to negotiate with your subject teacher whenever you experience difficulties in attending.
It is important to remember that, if you are receiving financial assistance through Centrelink, you must maintain regular attendance to qualify for your benefit and make sure you do not have unexplained absences. More than five unexplained absences in a term may mean a cut to your benefit. If you are absent through illness, present your certificate to the Student Centre. If you are experiencing difficulties, speak to a counsellor.
Counselling Services
Thebarton staff are always willing to assist you with your studies. There are a number of other services that will help you to achieve your personal best.
The Counselling team is located in the Administration building and is where you need to go for all student matters such as enrolments, subject changes, fee payments, cancellations and counselling. The Student Counsellors are available at every break or you can make an appointment to see them at other times by calling in or telephoning 08 8352 5811.
Course counselling is available to all students, both on the day of enrolment and throughout the year. Selection of the most appropriate subjects is vital for your future and we understand that students have a variety of reasons for returning to study.
The Counsellors and other visiting service providers are available to help you in a variety of matters including:
- career counselling
- personal counselling
- study skills
- financial issues
- health support
- pregnancy and post natal services
- psychological services
- youth issues
- housing support
- Centrelink services
Multiculturalism in the College
The students at Thebarton Senior College come from many racial, cultural and religious backgrounds.
The backgrounds of all students are important and valued by the staff and students at the College. They provide a rich and unique educational environment in which to learn. No form of racial harassment will be tolerated at the College.
You are encouraged to join in the many events and celebrations which take place each term to recognize the diversity of our students' backgrounds and celebrate all the cultures represented on the site.
The College celebrates International Harmony Day every March and organises its own activities including music, dance, food and customs during annual events, which acknowledge, celebrate and respect the diversity and richness of the cultures represented in the student body.
